Disturbing the Present!

“To better the future we must disturb the present.” These words have really challenged my thoughts this week and are very much in line with our hopes for what God will do through us as we plan for the future of our own church. They are words spoken by Catherine Booth, who, along with her husband, William, set about sharing the message of Jesus in a way ordinary people could  understand and relate to. Despite criticism and opposition, they sought to bring Jesus to those who felt rejected and not welcome in the established Church. They founded the ‘Salvation Army’ which went on to cause many ‘disturbances’ to help alleviate injustice, pain and struggle in the lives of people around them – a work which continues around the world today. As we read these words, there is a challenge for us, as we ask ourselves the question, “What does this mean for me today? What needs to be disturbed in our church’s life to discover God’s direction for its future?” Please pray with me – “Disturb me Lord, increase my distress for perishing unbelievers, the persecuted church and open my eyes to injustice and the struggles people face in our very own community. Increase my resolve and equip me to do what I can to bring relief and the full rescue of the Good News of Jesus.” Matt 25.40 (NLT) “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me [Jesus}!’ Bryan
