Harvest – time for action

If you’re like me the nearest you’ll get to experiencing a harvest is spending a couple of hours picking blackberries, reaping what we haven’t sown! Just recently whilst walking across a field already harvested I picked up an ear of wheat left behind. It got me thinking & it was only today that my thoughts crystallised as I read Ruth 2.2: “ And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, ‘Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favour.’” In Israelite law the corners of all fields were not to be harvested & this plus any grain dropped was left for the poor to collect. In a world which has the capability of feeding everyone, why is it that 1 in 9 people will go to bed hungry tonight and in the time it takes you to read this short paragraph six children will have died as a result of hunger. Harvest provides not just an opportunity to be thankful for what we have but also to consider what God might want us to do to help resolve this crisis.
