How can you act this week?

While we’re not able to meet together at church, we’re going through the book of Joshua.  This week we’ve been reading chapter 5. Here are some thoughts:

  • Vulnerable through obedience, protected through faith
  • Passover, joyfully celebrated with thankful hearts!
  • Human strategy ruled out – we are on God’s side.
  • Moses & Joshua both encountered the holiness of God.

But Ali was first drawn to the New Testament: Matthew 5:16 English Standard Version (ESV) “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” As we are reading through the book of Joshua together, I have been encouraged at the number of ways God has breathed new life into the passages and how church members have been sharing the links with this book from the Old Testament and the current situation we find ourselves in. In chapter 5 we read of how anyone born in the desert as they fled Egypt had not been circumcised and that Joshua commanded that they should be. The act of circumcision was an act of obedience to God but also was an outward symbol so that the Israelite men would be recognised as Jews. How do we show our faith to others? How can others recognise it? I have been led to this verse in Matthew several times over the past weeks. It is our actions that will speak for us. There is a well-known saying that says ‘actions speak louder than words’ and so it is our actions that need to speak of God’s love for this world. How can you ‘act’ this week? Can you phone someone in isolation? Could you collect shopping or a prescription for someone? Have you placed a rainbow or a teddy bear in your window? Would you be bold enough to share that you are completing these acts because you want to share God’s love? Pray for who God wants you to help this week and let’s build and grow God’s love in our community and offer the reassurance that God so loves this world that He has already sacrificed His son for us.
