Our Great Big God!

Our world is forever changing. We put on the news and see and hear things that disturb us, things that make us anxious, maybe things that make us fearful. Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever! God is great! Our hope is in Jesus. So how is it that I can believe in God but then sometimes I don’t believe in God? It’s not about me becoming an atheist or anything like that, it’s the difficulty that happens when I hold firmly to my belief in a good, loving God but then live as if he’s not there at all. A crisis arises and I focus on the mountain that is in front of me. I scarcely consider that God might do something to help. In John 6:5-7 it says “when Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming towards him, he said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. Philip answered him, ‘It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Philip had been at the wedding in Cana and had seen the wine miracle there, but presented with this problem he viewed it from a merely human standpoint. All he could think was we can’t afford it! What actually happened was that God provided and there was plenty for all with leftovers. Just like Philip scratching his head and doing his sums, we can sing about God being all-powerful on Sunday morning but forget all about that truth when Monday comes around. Let’s pray that when our faith seems like an irrelevant theory, that our faith would increase and we will be able to see life through the lens of the reality, presence and power of our great big God!
