Do Not Worry

Luke 12 verses 22 to 31 “Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.  23  For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.  24  Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!  25  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?  26  Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? 27  “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these.  28  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!  29  And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.  30  For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.  31  But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.”

Looking back at my previous headlines, they have featured deer, ducks and eagles so today ravens are making an appearance! As a teacher working on the ‘chalk-face’ I have felt so at risk over the pandemic but have manged to stay COVID-free ….. until this week! Richard was the first to succumb and then, never one to miss out, I joined him and we have been like a pair of zombies ever since! However, what has been evident throughout this week has been God’s amazing father-like provision: For Father’s Day this year, Abi and Kieran had offered to cook Gousto meals for us and the pre-arranged dates agreed were for this week so this has meant that we haven’t had to worry about main meals. My current school has been fantastic, my colleagues have planned cover lessons so that I haven’t had to plan any at all. I have been blown away by the provision that has been offered without me having to ask for it. This passage is entitled ‘Do not worry’ and yet we do, don’t we? Take a few moments to reflect on what has dominated your thoughts this week. Have you invited the Lord into these thoughts? How many times do we churn and worry over matters and yet do not allow the Lord to have His way? This week I have simply not had the energy to do any of the things that I would usually do and yet I have still had a roof over my head, food and water – everything that I have needed has been provided and so much more. I haven’t had to ask for anything. Verses 29 and 30 state: ‘And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things and your Father knows that you need them.’ Let’s keep our focus off the things of this world for that is not the Lord’s way. One of our ‘mantra’ songs at church is ‘Jesus, be the Centre. Be my source, be my light, Jesus.’ Let’s put Jesus first in everything. Keep Him central to everything that we do and trust Him to provide what we need. Ali
