What do you understand by the term ‘highlight’? For some strange reason my thoughts immediately filled with images of strands of hair, lightened by the wonder of chemistry! I expect that for one particular American the highlight of his whole life occurred last Wednesday as he finally moved into the White House. I wonder what you would consider as the highlight of your past week? For me, it was a trip to the dentist last Tuesday – another strange thought! Why? Because it reminded me that the creator God loves me and cares for me. I had originally made this appointment 2 weeks prior, to check on a root filling done last year and as time went on, I began to be concerned about the increased Covid risk and thought of cancelling it. I decided to leave that decision till the last minute. However, on Sunday night I felt a dull ache in a totally different tooth, on Monday night I hardly slept with the pain and on Tuesday there was nothing going to stop me going to the dentist! Some would regard this as a co-incidence but recently I have heard of so many such ‘coincidences’. I believe that we are each unwittingly experiencing God’s meticulous providence in our everyday lives, so let’s recognise that and be thankful. Reading through the Old Testament book of Ruth, we may not find miracles, but we discover that God is still at work, as we see His provision in the ordinary aspects of their daily life, to secure a future for both Ruth and Naomi and, at the same time, establish the royal line of King David. Look each day for how God may be at work in the ordinariness of your life. The American preacher, John Piper once said, “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them.” Bryan
