The Trustworthiness of God

“You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord?  And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights.” 2 Samuel 22:29 – 34

This week Richard and I celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary. It’s often at times like this that we take time to pause and reflect on what has happened over that time. Throughout this time, we have had moments of great joy, moments of sheer terror and a load of different experiences in between!  We were both Christians when we were married and we firmly believed that God had brought us together and He has been central to our relationship throughout. Has that promised us a bed of roses? The simple answer is no but what He has promised is never to forsake us and to support and provide for us as we have put our trust in Him.

In these verses, King David praised God, proclaiming, “The lord’s word is flawless.” Then, he used a series of wonderful images to illustrate how dependable God was to him. God’s love is as solid as a rock. God is like a protective shield for those who look to Him for protection. With wisdom, He leads His people along the mountain heights like a surefooted deer. These images imply danger and difficult circumstances. God does not insulate us from all trouble, but He enables us to stay faithful to Him.

We all face different challenges in our lives but the one thing we can depend upon is that with God on our side, we are never alone. One of my favourite poems is ‘Footprints in the Sand’ I’ll not print the whole poem (feel free to look it up) but it ends with the following words:

He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.”

In the week ahead I would like to encourage you to take time to reflect on whether your circumstances put you in bright sunshine or dark shadow, consider the trustworthiness of God and offer Him your worship in prayer. Ali
